After defeating struggling Southampton thanks to an early goal from Erling Haaland, Manchester City returned to the top of the Premier League.

The visitors appeared to be headed for a crushing loss until Haaland turned Matheus Nunes’ fifth-minute cross past Saints keeper Aaron Ramsdale after shrugging off Jan Bednarek.

It was his 11th league goal of the year.

However, a few home nerves were maintained prior to the final whistle thanks to a mixture of their own tenacious defense and some subpar City finishing.

With Haaland being the main offender.

The outcome increased City’s Premier League winning streak to 32 games.

They have just six weeks left till they have gone a full year since their last loss.

Which came on December 6th to Aston Villa.

Despite their valiant efforts, Southampton’s struggles at the bottom of the table were not alleviated by the outcome.

Nearly a quarter of the way through the season, Russell Martin’s team still has just one point.

Martin must hope Southampton’s owners are patient with him as he attempts to turn the club around after their return to the top division.

Although they can find comfort in the fact that the only time they have lost any of their opening nine games was in 1998–99.

Haaland is wasteful, yet the City completes the task given City’s long list of injuries

Manager Pep Guardiola will be thrilled if his team wins so they can watch Arsenal’s performance.

Against Liverpool from a position of power and without any further issues.

However, Haaland will question how in the world he managed to leave with just one goal.

Bringing his season total to 14 across all competitions.

His violent altercation with Bednarek left him with a torn shirt.

But his inability to score more than once resulted in two head-in-hands situations.

At the beginning of the second session, the Norwegian jumped on Savinho’s far-post cross just a yard out. He missed the ball somehow. That defeat left Haaland and everyone else in the stadium in a state of bewildered astonishment.

When Taylor Harwood-Bellis, a former City youth, turned his header off the line, Haaland was as shocked. Furthermore, he missed his third chance, which was likewise at the far post, as he only managed to turn what should have been a simple header back across goal for Southampton to clear.

He was sent racing toward the Southampton goal in stoppage time, which was his last chance. Ramsdale made the block this time.

Phil Foden, who was making just his second Premier League start of the season, missed a shot at the beginning of the second period despite Haaland’s best attempts.

It was not cozy or attractive. However, City completed the task, and that is all that mattered.

Lallana’s comeback strengthens the Saints
Adam Lallana’s comeback was a huge bonus for the visitors in a match that most people thought Southampton would lose badly.

It is unrealistic to expect the 36-year-old former England midfielder to play every minute of every match. But his experience is invaluable on days like today.

Lallana has always had a keen understanding of the game and has grown.

Into a capable leader who can direct teammates into the proper places.

Lallana made sure the home team understood their opponents would not roll over, even though his game versus City lacked any creative elements.

Lallana spearheaded the protests at Flynn Downes’s easy first-half booking, which resulted in Martin receiving a similar one for his obviously excessive criticism of referee Tony Harrington to fourth official Sam Allison.

Lallana’s final act was to argue with Allison directly after Joe Aribo took his position.

He appeared to be informing Allison that he had not committed as many offenses as opponents.

Who had not received a yellow card, as Lallana had also been booked by that time.

But his work was done. Southampton was still playing when he left. And as substitute Paul Onuachu threatened to steal an unexpected point in the closing minutes, they maintained that optimism.

Although Southampton can take pride in the performance, they were not rewarded since Ederson,

The first goalie, and Ruben Dias, the captain, made sure the home team survived.
