A Tolkien route: Locating the actual Middle-earth

Even though Tolkien’s stories are set in the made-up world of Middle-earth, you might be surprised to see how similar the breathtaking settings are in the books, movies, and television series.

The Fellowship of the Ring, the first book in J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy, was published in the summer of 1954, 70 years ago.

Not only that, but on August 29, 2024, the second season of the legendary television series The Rings of Power debuted.

Marking another significant milestone for Tolkien’s legendarium.

The locations are stunning, ranging from idyllic, rolling hills to plummeting valleys and harsh deserts.

As befits the greatest epic fantasy series.

Furthermore, despite the fact that Tolkien’s stories are set in the made-up world of Middle-earth.

The breathtaking settings found in his writings, movies, and television shows are not as fantastical as you might think.

Seeing them brings to life not only the imagined realms that Tolkien created.

But also the landscapes themselves, since many of them are based on actual places.

The Tolkien Route : England’s lancashire

Tolkien spent some time living at the renowned Lancashire boarding school Stonyhurst College.

Where his son was a teacher, during the 1940s when he was composing The Lord of the Rings.

The woods and undulating hills of the nearby Ribble Valley are believed to have served as inspiration for the elder Tolkien as he penned the Shire.

The hobbits’ rural homeland. He was known to stroll around these areas frequently.

The Tolkien Route : England’s lancashire

Currently, enthusiasts can discover the region via the Tolkien Trail, which debuted in 2002 and leads hikers through the very settings that served as the author’s inspiration.

The tour begins in Hurst Green village at the evocative Shireburn Arms pub.

Which dates back to the 17th century and is frequented by Tolkien.

The route then meanders over gently rolling farmland for around seven easy miles.

Passing the impressive structures of Stonyhurst College and historic sites like Cromwell’s Bridge.

An overgrown packhorse bridge that was formerly utilized by Oliver Cromwell during the English Civil War.

While Tolkien did not specifically record the impact of locations along the route, there are a number of possible inspirations.

The path passes the aristocratic mansion Hacking Hall, where, in the days of Tolkien.

Passengers were transported across the River Ribble by the Hacking Ferry, a wooden ferry barge.

Similar hobbit transportation over the Brandywine River is provided by the.

Bucklebury Ferry (located outside the grand residence Brandy Hall) in The Fellowship of the Ring.

As the hobbits flee from a terrifying phantom horseman.

In contrast, the Shireburns were a local landowner family near Stonyhurst; Tolkien’s Middle-earth geography included the River Shirebourne with the same name.

In contrast, Tolkien’s maps show the confluence of three rivers in a manner that is precisely similar to the way the Hodder, Ribble, and Calder rivers meet here in

Lancashire: the Shirebourne, Withywindle, and Brandywine.

Furthermore, halfway up the tower is a unique feature of St. Mary’s Church in the nearby village of Newchurch-in-Pendle: an eye-shaped carving known as the Eye of God.

Which mimics the all-seeing Eye of Sauron from the films and literature The Lord of the Rings.

Cheddar Gorge, England’s somerset

While most of the real-world locations linked to Tolkien’s imagination of Middle-earth are merely educated guesses.

The author himself acknowledged one location as the real-world source of inspiration for The Lord of the Rings.

After getting married in 1916, Tolkien and Edith spent their honeymoon in the Somerset town of Clevedon.

While there, they visited Cheddar Gorge, a vertical limestone valley adorned with caverns whose walls are adorned with exquisite rock formations.

Including stalactites and stalagmites, one of Britain’s most breathtaking vistas.

Taking notes, the honeymooning author always at least partially married to his work confirmed in a private correspondence from 1971 that the Cheddar Gorge.

Caverns served as the inspiration for The Lord of the Rings’ Glittering caverns of Helm’s Deep (released in 1981 as part of The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien).

You may probably recognize parts of Tolkien’s description of the Glittering Caves when you visit Gough Cave.

The most well-known of the caves in Cheddar: “columns of white and saffron and dawn-rose… fluted and twisted into dreamy forms.”

Denize Bluffs: New Zealand’s Waitomo

Denize Bluffs, a region of towering rock formations and untamed bush on New Zealand’s North Island.

Is instantly recognizable to ardent fans of The Lord of the Rings.

This terrain appears in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

The prequel film, as the Trollshaws, a hillside forest where Bilbo Baggins meets some angry trolls.

Conversely, Denize Bluffs is a section of the highland home of the hobbit characters of the TV series, the Harfoots.

Sitting on a privately owned sheep and cattle farm that has been in the same family for three generations is actually Denize Bluffs.

The current stewards, Warrick and Suzie Denize.

Are extremely proud of their involvement with the Lord of the Rings and currently oversee Hairy Feet Waitomo.

They offer tours of the property that highlight the many sites from the TV series and movies and bring them to life with stories from the showbiz world.

Reservations are required for tours. The property is located around eight miles to the west of Piopio town.

Stow-on-the-World, England; Gloucestershire

The Lord of the Rings is imbued with spirituality, despite the fact that Tolkien.

A devout man, consistently rejected the notion that the book was a Christian allegory.

Throughout his career, Tolkien was a professor at the University of Oxford.

It is well known that he frequently traveled to the Cotswolds.

A gorgeous region famed for its golden-stone villages, softly undulating hills, and incredibly stunning churches.

St. Edward’s Church, located in the market town of Stow-on-the-Wold.

Is one of those churches that has long been identified as Tolkien’s most likely inspiration.

Among the most photographed doors in the nation is its north door.

Which is made of thick, studded wood, has an oil light hanging from it.

And is topped with an arching architrave.

The two enormous, twisted, and gnarled yew trees that flank the doorway are its most outstanding feature. They were planted three centuries ago and have grown into the actual church’s structure.

Beautiful hand-drawn illustrations by Tolkien, one of which shows the Doors of Durin.

A secret opening to a mountain’s interior that houses the Dwarf city of khazaddum, were included with his books.

The long-running rumor that Tolkien took inspiration for his magical mountain doors from the north door of St. Edward’s Church is based on the fact that.

Despite being style his drawing bears striking similarities to the actual door, even down to the lamp hanging above it and the trees that bookmark the entrance.

Tenerife, Spain’s Teide National Park

In the latest series of The Rings of Power, the moon-like deserts of Tenerife play a major role as a desolate wasteland that two hobbits and the enigmatic Stranger, a wizard who has lost his memory, are traveling through.

It is understandable why the indigenous Guanche people of Tenerife with its harsh winds intense heat and dusty plains peppered with skeletal twisted trees.

Formerly thought that Teide was the entrance to the nether abode of the wicked deity Guayota.

It should come as no surprise that Teide was selected as the real-world location for the realm of Rhûn, which is a mysterious place of evil sorcery and moral depravity in Tolkien’s writings.

Trekking up Mount Teide, an active volcano that has not erupted since 1909, is a well-liked activity in the park. If you are feeling less daring, you can alternatively use the cable car.

Fiordland: New Zealand’s South Island

The entire film series of The Lord of the Rings was notably filmed in Peter Jackson’s native New Zealand.

The films make extensive use of the rivers and forests of Fiordland.

An area of green sloped, snow capped mountains that fall to glacier-carved inlets known as sounds.

It is not surprising that Jackson selected this area to symbolize some of the most untamed areas of Middle-earth.

Is it is New Zealand’s most pristine and biodiverse territory.

Scene of The Fellowship of the Ring is one of the other Fiordland locales featured in the movies.

Most people who come to Fiordland start their exploration at the lakeside town of Te Anau, which has a variety of lodging options, dining options.

And tour companies that offer boat and hiking excursions into the Fiordland National Park.

Father of American hostage held by Hamas says Lebanon attacks treat ‘agony with more agony’

0

Elbahrain.net The father of an American hostage still being held in Gaza by Hamas criticized the deadly attacks in Lebanon that caused pagers and walkie-talkies to explode killing dozens, stating “this pager, mission-impossible action, it’s like treating agony with more agony.”

Adi Alexander, whose son Edan Alexander is being held, said in an interview on “The Lead with Jake Tapper,” that “this vicious cycle of violence needs to stop.”

Israel has not officially taken credit for the attacks, but CNN has reported that Tuesday’s operation was a joint effort between the IDF and Mossad.

Alexander sat down with Tapper along with other family members of Americans being held by the terror group on Wednesday as the one-year anniversary of Hamas’s brutal October 7 attack approaches. As it stands the prospects of a deal being agreed that would free the hostages and halt the fighting in Gaza seem remote.

Instead, the conflict appears to be spreading. On Thursday Israel launched airstrikes against Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon and on Wednesday Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant stated  a “new era” of war is beginning.

On the ceasefire negotiations, Alexander called for President Joe Biden to “have a tight conversation” with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, telling him to “stop moving the goalposts and stop undercutting your own negotiating team.”

“This conversation needs to happen as soon as possible,” he added.

Netanyahu is scheduled to be in New York next week for the United Nations General Assembly, but a source told CNN that he will not meet with Biden.

Biden has previously suggested that Netanyahu is drawing out the conflict for the sake of his own political survival.

Iris Weinstein Haggai, whose parents were killed on October 7, said the US government needs to do more.

“It’s just unacceptable that we’re not doing all we can to push all countries and [the] international community to pressure Hamas and release these innocent hostages who are rotting,” Weinstein Haggai said.

Several of the hostage families are in Washington this week, just under three weeks from the anniversary of the October 7 attacks. The families met with national security adviser Jake Sullivan on Wednesday, where they “expressed frustration with the lack of tangible progress” in ceasefire talks, according to a readout of their meeting.

Their visit comes weeks after the Israeli military recovered the bodies of six hostages, including Israeli-American Hersh Goldberg-Polin, from Hamas-controlled tunnels in Gaza. Days before Goldberg-Polin’s death was confirmed, his parents made a plea for their son’s return at the Democratic National Convention.

Ronen Neutra, the father of Omer Neutra, said on Wednesday he was “horrified” by Goldberg-Polin’s death.

“Where is the outrage? How can it be that an American was murdered, and yet people are in the streets in New York cheering for Hamas? It’s the same organization (that) just killed an American,” he said. “So in that regard, where is the outrage?

“As far as Prime Minister Netanyahu? I don’t think I have much expectations from him I’m afraid,” Neutra added. “What he says out of Israel in front of the American public and what he says in Israel that those two don’t correlate.”

Jonathan Dekel-Chen, the father of another American hostage Sagui Dekel-Chen, said his expectations for a breakthrough in negotiations “are low.”

“All Israelis are done listening to Prime Minister Netanyahu because clearly there’s a gap between what he says in terms of his commitment to getting the hostages home and his actions,” Dekel-Chen added.

“It’s clear to me, at least that he’s coming to the United Nations certainly for domestic consumption in Israel,” he said. “What he says there, I’m not sure that anyone is going to be listening unfortunately in the General Assembly.”

“It’s just unacceptable that we’re not doing all we can to push all countries and [the] international community to pressure Hamas and release these innocent hostages who are rotting,” he said.

Cross-border strikes between Israel and Hezbollah escalate: What you need to know

0

Elbahrain.net The last 48 hours have seen the most intense exchanges of fire between Israel and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah since October 7 – with Hezbollah firing rockets deep into northern Israel early Sunday.

On Saturday, Israel pounded Hezbollah targets with nearly 300 strikes, in what the military said was pre-emptive action to ward off a major attack. Further strikes continued Sunday. Lebanon’s official news agency said there had been 60 strikes on villages in southern Lebanon.

Hezbollah has been left reeling after two days of blasts targeting pagers and walkie-talkies used by its members was followed by an Israeli strike on southern Beirut, which killed a top commander and other senior operatives.

Below are the latest developments:

  • Hezbollah strikes northern Israel: More than 100 “projectiles” have been fired from Lebanon into Israel overnight, the Israeli military has said. About 85 were fired around 6:30 a.m. local time, after approximately 20 were fired about 90 minutes earlier, the military said. “Some of the projectiles were intercepted, and fallen projectiles were identified in the areas of Kiryat Bialik, Tsur Shalom, and Moreshet,” the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said. Video in Israeli media showed cars on fire on a street corner in the northern town of Kiryat Bialik.
  • Sunday strikes: Hezbollah’s strikes on Israel continued into Sunday, with Hezbollah saying it had launched “tens of Fadi 1 and Fadi 2” rockets toward Ramat David air base in northern Israel for a second time. The rockets, Hezbollah says, are in response to repeated Israeli strikes in Lebanon that have led to the deaths of “many civilians.” Little is known about the rockets, which appear to be a new addition to Hezbollah’s vast arsenal.
  • Technology company targeted: Hezbollah said it also targeted RAFAEL, an Israeli military technologies company based in the Haifa area in northern Israel. The group’s statement said targeting RAFAEL is in support of Palestinians in Gaza but also a response to the explosions that hit pagers and walkie-talkies this week. The company offered no comment on the claimed attack.
  • Israeli strikes continue: Israeli aircraft have carried out more than 300 air strikes on multiple locations in eastern and southern Lebanon over the past 24 hours. An IDF spokesman said that the strikes came after plans were detected for a Hezbollah barrage. The Israeli military strikes continued Sunday.
  • Civilian restrictions expanded: The IDF announced new restrictions on public activities Sunday in northern Israel and parts of the Golan Heights. From 6 a.m. this morning local time through Monday evening, schools will be closed. Gatherings will be limited to 10 people outdoors and 100 people inside, according to the IDF. Beaches will also be closed to the public. Work-related activities can continue as long as shelter is nearby.
  • Beirut death toll rises: The death toll from an Israeli strike on southern Beirut that targeted several Hezbollah commanders on Friday has risen to 45, Lebanon’s health ministry said Sunday. Emergency services are still combing through the rubble left by the attack, it said, using DNA samples to identify the remains. Hezbollah has confirmed that senior commander Ibrahim Aqil died in the strike, which leveled a multistory building in a densely populated Beirut neighborhood.
  • Netanyahu delays trip: Amid the flare-up, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has delayed his trip to New York for the United Nations General Assembly amid escalating tensions with Hezbollah. The prime minister had already pushed his departure from Tuesday to Wednesday, but “for now” plans to leave Friday, an Israeli official told CNN.
  • Al Jazeera raid: Al Jazeera has broadcast live footage of Israeli soldiers raiding its offices in Ramallah in the occupied West Bank, and ordering its closure for 45 days. The footage showed the network’s bureau chief Walid Omary and staff members live on air as Israeli soldiers entered. Video broadcast by Al Jazeera showed one soldier informing Omary of a military order to close Al Jazeera’s office for 45 days.

  • Jackson’s “masterclass” shows the Chelsea striker’s trajectory.

Nicolas Jackson’s two-year contract extension until 2033 from Chelsea eight days ago may have come as a surprise to some.

With 14 goals in 35 Premier League games, his contribution in his first season at Stamford Bridge following his £32m move from Villarreal in June 2023 has been respectable rather than spectacular.

However, the 23-year-old striker showed that the club does not have much confidence in him after Chelsea beat West Ham at the London Stadium.

The nine-year contract may be an indication of Stamford Bridge’s confidence in his ability to guide the squad for years to come.

With the start of the 2024-25 season, there is something intriguing about Jackson.

Jackson’s masterclass shows the Chelsea

When asked about Jackson’s performance against the Hammers by BBC Match of the Day, Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca wasted no time in bringing up an important point.

He stated, “We are very, very satisfied with Nicolas.”

“He is very good on the ball, and he has worked hard since I arrived. We are very happy.”

Although the Senegal international’s season is still young, the statistics mentioned by Maresca are clearly better than the previous year.

Jackson’s xG (expected goals) average so far is 0.81 versus 0.60, and he’s averaging 0.98 goals per game this season compared to 0.45 in 2023-2024.

Additionally, in five games during the 2024-25 season, he attempted 2.0 shots compared to 1.3 shots the previous year for the Blues..

When it comes to big chances created (1.0 vs 0.4) and missed (0.5 vs 0.8), Jackson’s stats seem to indicate a more clinical edge to his game.

“Nicolas Jackson underperformed in his xG by about six goals last season,” said Dave, a Statman football analyst.

“He could be good; he’s been on top this year.”

Does the pattern remind us of Drogba’s pattern?

Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson has four goals in five Premier League appearances this season

In his previous 29 Premier League games for Chelsea, Jackson has contributed to 23 goals (16 goals, 7 assists), with 11 of those goals coming in his last 10 games (eight goals, 3 assists).

He claimed that his teammates “had faith” in him and his confidence “went higher” with them after the win.

Jackson and Chelsea teammate Cole Palmer have scored 10 Premier League goals since the 2023-24 season began.

At least two more than any other duo in England’s top flight.

Jackson is a superior player. Palmer stated to TNT Sports, “We know his capabilities; Chelsea players and fans really appreciate it.

Early indications of a strong relationship between Jackson and new signing Jadon Sancho.

Who combined well to score the game’s opening goal against the Hammers were equally encouraging for Chelsea fans.

Jackson, however, provided a “masterclass in generating space,” according to former Chelsea striker Demba Ba, who saw his second goal.

“He goes in there and takes defenders out of position in the best way,” continued compatriot Ba. “Even more satisfying than the actual end result.”

Jackson was still “learning his craft” as a “young man and a young player,” according to former Chelsea and West Ham midfielder Joe Cole.

Who likened his early years at Stamford Bridge to those of one of the Premier League’s legendary teams.

“Dier Drogba’s first two seasons, when he was not as successful as the next, are often talked about.

Cole told TNT Sports, “But he [Jackson] has been scoring goals and he’s going to get better.”

“He has to continue to get better, calm down and gain confidence. He will now be up for the next game.”

Erling Haaland’s incredible start to the season sees him break yet another Premier League scoring record.

Erling Haaland has surpassed record after record since joining Manchester City, leaving himself with apparently unachievable standards.

Despite this, he has managed to keep shattering records this season, scoring nine goals in just four Premier League games.

Which is more than the previous record of eight established by Wayne Rooney. It is the most prolific start to a season ever.

With the exception of his own Manchester City, Haaland’s nine goals this season are more than any other Premier League side has scored combined.

This is a result of his dominance.

Erling Haaland scores his team’s first goal against Brentford

And on Saturday, the Norwegian player was denied an incredible run of three straight Premier League hattricks by the narrowest margin of a goalpost.

In the end, he scored two goals in the closing minutes to help Manchester City defeat Brentford 2-1. This brought his career goal total with the club to 99 in just 103 games.

His first goal came in the 19th minute, with City trailing after Brentford had scored just 22 seconds earlier.

He scored his second goal right before the break, outwitting the Bees defenders and chipping the ball into the net after latching onto goalkeeper Ederson’s long pass forward.

After losing a close friend earlier in the week, Haaland was doubtful for the game. This performance came after that.

In just 48 games, Haaland has already surpassed Andrew Cole’s previous record by 17 goals to become the fastest player to reach 50 Premier League goals.

In the event that he tops the league in scoring once more this year.

He will become the first player to earn three Golden Boots in a row since Thierry Henry in 2006.

He possesses the all-around qualities of strength, size, and speed.

The host of the podcast “The Rest Is Football,” and a well-known BBC commentator.

One of the secrets to scoring goals is that he does not care about missing.

He misses opportunities but in order to be a truly excellent goal scorer.

One must miss a lot of opportunities because doing so creates many opportunities for one to score if one is a strong finisher which he is.

‘He could go down as best ever’ – Ohtani makes MLB 50-50 history

0

The Los Angeles Dodgers superstar needed one stolen base and two home runs to achieve the feat and took his tally to 51 home runs and 51 steals during a 20-4 win over the Miami Marlins.

The 30-year-old stole third base in the first inning to achieve the first part of the record.

He then added another steal to move to 51, before smashing a 49th home run of the season in the sixth inning.

That home run tied the Dodgers’ record for most in a season set by Shawn Green in 2001.

The Japanese player then made it 50 in the next inning to become the first player to record the 50-50 feat.

“To be honest, I’m the one probably most surprised,” Ohtani said.

“I have no idea where this came from, but I’m glad that I performed well.”

Reacting on X, formerly Twitter, NFL superstar Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs described Ohtani’s achievement as “insane”, while basketball icon LeBron James said “This guy is unreal! Wowzers”.

‘One of a kind’ Ohtani on course to be ‘best ever’

Ohtani joined the Dodgers on a 10-year $700m (£527m) contract – the biggest deal in the sport’s history – in December after leaving the Los Angeles Angels.

It made him one of the highest-earning athletes in the world.

MLB ambassador and former World Series winner Chase Utley told BBC Sport Ohtani is “truly one of a kind”.

“To do it in his first year in a Dodgers uniform is pretty special. He has separated himself – I don’t think there is a question – as the best [current] player in all of baseball,” Utley said.

“If he continues this pace throughout the course of his contract he will go down as the best player to ever play the game. You couldn’t have dreamed of a season like that.

“He can really do it all. You don’t see a player who has the ability to hit the ball over the fence but also steal that many bases.

“He is the first to do it and I can’t imagine many are going to do it any time soon – I’m not sure I see it happening ever, to be honest.”

Ohtani has played 866 MLB games, the most among all active players to have never played in the post-season until now, after the Dodgers made the play-offs for a 12th straight year.

MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said: “While Shohei Ohtani has been a groundbreaking player for many years, his latest feat as the first 50-50 player in the history of Major League Baseball reflects not just his amazing power-and-speed talent, but his character, his drive, and his commitment to all-around excellence.

“On behalf of Major League Baseball, I congratulate Shohei on this remarkable achievement. We are proud that he continues to take our game to new heights.”

BBC Sport will have live coverage of Sunday’s game between the Baltimore Orioles and Detroit Tigers, a crucial game in the play-off race, on BBC iPlayer, plus the BBC Sport website and app, from 18:30 BST, with coverage beginning on the Red Button at 19:30.

Kylie Minogue announces biggest tour in a decade

0

Popstar Kylie Minogue has announced her biggest world tour in more than a decade, and a sequel to her comeback album Tension.

The 13 tracks on Tension II will be released on 18 October, with the global tour kicking off in her home country Australia in February, before swinging through Asia and the UK.

In a statement, the pop icon said she is “beyond excited” to be “celebrating the Tension era and more” with fans.

“There will be a whole lot of Padaming,” she said, a reference to her viral, Grammy-winning 2023 single Padam Padam.

Twenty dates have been announced so far, but Minogue said more are coming.

The 56-year-old is in the middle of a career renaissance, off the back of Tension and Padam Padam.

In February she picked up her second Grammy – 20 years after her first – and the following month received the Brits’ Global Icon Award.

Since popping up as plucky car mechanic Charlene on soap opera Neighbours in 1986, she’s racked up dozens of hit singles and a trophy cabinet full of awards.

She’s also performed at the Sydney Olympics, been made an OBE, and starred in several films.

The tour and album has been met with excitement – and some stress.

The concert dates in Newcastle clash with Eurovision which is being held in Switzerland in May.

Meanwhile, her shows in Sydney are happening at the same time as the annual Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras parade – prompting many of her Australian fans to weigh up a difficult dilemma. Minogue has a large following in the LGBT community.

“What should we do… On a Night Like This?!” one online commenter said.

US soldier facing desertion punishment after escaping to North Korea

0

Elbahrain.net Travis King, the US soldier who escaped to North Korea from South Korea last year before being sent back home, was dishonorably discharged from the military and given a one-year prison sentence.

Charges against him included assaulting a non-commissioned officer and deserting in July 2023.

However, the 24-year-old Army private was released because he had previously completed his time and received praise for his good behavior, his legal team told the BBC.

He entered a guilty plea to five of the first 14 military charges that were brought against him at Friday’s hearing at Fort Bliss, Texas. The remaining counts were dropped.

King enlisted in the army in January 2021 and crossed into North Korea while on a unit tour in South Korea.

King informed military court Lt Col Rick Mathew at the trial that he had been considering leaving the US Army for almost a year before he absconded into North Korea because he was “dissatisfied” with his job.

“I wanted to flee from the US Army and never come back,” King said, according to reporters inside the courtroom.

In addition, he disclosed that he had received a mental health diagnosis; yet, he insisted that he was competent to face trial and was aware of the allegations.

Franklin Rosenblatt, King’s attorney, stated in a statement that his client acknowledges complete responsibility for the events that transpired and that King “had many difficulties throughout his life, such as a rough upbringing, exposure to dangerous situations, and mental health issues.”

According to Mr. Rosenblatt, “all these things have worsened the challenges he suffered in the service.”

While on a civilian tour of the town of Panmunjom, which is situated on the tightly fortified Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) separating North and South Korea, King entered North Korea unlawfully. After being freed from a South Korean prison where he had spent almost two months on accusations of assaulting two individuals and kicking a police car, he embarked on the civilian tour.

He was driven to the airport upon his release so he could go back to the Fort Bliss post and be disciplined there. King, however, chose to join the civilian tour rather than board the aircraft, and in the end, he fled into North Korea, where he was apprehended by the local government.

He had left the US military due to “inhuman treatment” and prejudice, according to North Korean media at the time.

In almost five years, he became the first American held in North Korea.

Following “intensive diplomacy,” King was freed two months later, according to US officials at the time. He was flown to a US airbase in South Korea by a state department plane.

He was returned to Texas by air on September 28, 2023, and has been detained there ever since.

The US military accused him of deserting, hitting and striking other personnel, illegally carrying alcohol, fabricating a statement, and having a video showing a youngster having sex with another person the following month.

Eager to Defend the Indonesian National Team, Mauro Zijlstra Hopes to Meet Erick Thohir

0

Eager to Defend

The player of Indonesian descent, Mauro Zijlstra, seems to really want to defend the Indonesian National Team. The reason is, the FC Volendam U-21 player wants to meet the General Chairman (Ketum) of PSSI Erick Thohir so that his naturalization process can be processed immediately.

Zijlstra is one of the names currently being targeted by PSSI to be naturalized so that he can defend the Indonesian National Team. This is already an open secret because now PSSI is checking the completeness of the documents of the 19-year-old striker.

However, it is not yet known for sure how Zijlstra’s naturalization process will continue.
But it is likely that the player born in Zaandam.

Netherlands, will almost certainly become a candidate for the Indonesian National Team. Moreover, Shin Tae-yong is looking for a striker.

Zijlstra also has high hopes for PSSI so that the process can be completed soon. This is because the FC Volendam U-21 player can’t wait to defend the Indonesian National Team.

“Yes, of course not (can’t wait to defend the National Team),” said Zijlstra, quoted from Yussa Nugraha’s Youtube channel, Friday (20/9/2024).

“Because I’ve been waiting for a while, of course I’m even more excited to play for this beautiful country, of course, so we’ll see,” he continued.

Eager to Defend

Zijlstra hopes that his naturalization process will continue to experience positive developments. So that way, he can soon meet Erick Thohir to shake hands. Because if that happens, he is certain to be a candidate for the Indonesian National Team.

“I hope the process can progress even more and I can fly to Indonesia to also, of course,
meet the general chairman of PSSI, Mr. Erick Thohir.

Yes, so that my process is closer and I can play for the Indonesian National Team as soon as possible,” explained Zijlstra.

Zijlstra is a striker who is considered suitable to sharpen the Indonesian National Team’s attack line. Currently with FC Volendam U-21

he has scored two goals and one assist in two Dutch U-21 League 2 matches in 2024-2025.
