The Game Winning Tonali

Newcastle is “beginning to see the best” of the game winning Tonali

After defeating Brentford 3-1 at St. James’ Park to secure their spot in the Carabao Cup semi-finals. Manager Eddie Howe claims Newcastle is finally “beginning to see the best” of Sandro Tonali.

The Italy international gave the Magpies a lesson in midfield play, scoring the first two goals against the Bees.

Tino Livramento’s cross was only partially cleared. And the former AC Milan midfielder added to his total with a cushioned side-foot volley from. Anthony Gordon’s corner from the right. His first goal was an exquisite 20-yard drive.

After waking up to media stories that linked him to a move to Juventus, Tonali, 24. Who returned this season after serving a 10-month sentence for breaking betting regulations. Made a heartfelt gesture to the home crowd as he celebrated his first goal.

Howe stated, “You want your big acquisitions to do well and settle quickly, and he is a major signing.”

“He is been here for a long time, but he has not played much football. I am just incredibly happy for him personally the game winning Tonali. And nights like tonight will strengthen the bonds with him and the supporters.

“Watching Sandro score the two goals he did was fantastic. He is beginning to show his best side.

Howe added: “The change in position has obviously helped him. He is a lot more comfortable when he is deeper on the pitch.” Tonali, who cost £55 million to join Newcastle in the summer of 2023. Played the role of orchestrator for a large portion of Wednesday’s encounter.

“He is exhibiting every trait we were aware of when we signed him. Finding the ideal balance for him and the team is all that has to be done.

Fabian Schar’s tap-in from captain Bruno Guimaraes gave the home team their third goal, capping off a well-earned victory.

Brentford had a terrible evening. Managing only two efforts on goal before Yoane Wissa poked in a late consolation in extra time.

Before that, Newcastle had already struck the woodwork twice as substitute Harvey Barnes. Jacob Murphy, Alexander Isak, and Gordon all missed opportunities to punish their unimpressive opponents even more.

The loss of Sepp van den Berg during the warm-up and the limping departure of their captain and fellow center-back Ethan Pinnock after 15 minutes did not help Thomas Frank’s team.

The Dane will probably still be unhappy with how they lost, though, since his team hardly put up a fight as their terrible travel record persisted.

Following the conclusion of Tottenham’s quarterfinal match against Manchester United at 20:00 GMT on Thursday, the semi-final draw will take place.

As Howe increases hopes of ending the trophy drought, Frank shuffles the pack.

Less than two weeks ago, Brentford won the Premier League match against Newcastle at the Gtech Community Stadium.

The Bees have now dropped eight of their nine games against top-tier opponents this season away from their London home.

They will play their third game in seven days on Saturday when they visit high-flying Nottingham Forest. Frank made five changes to the team that began their narrow loss at Chelsea on Sunday.

And it showed; his team lacked consistency and fluency throughout, and shortly after the hour, Wissa’s goal’s creator, Bryan Mbeumo, came in from the bench.

Expectations on Tyneside, on the other hand, are only going to rise following this performance, as Magpies fans dare to hope that their lengthy trophy drought may come to an end.

The Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1969 was their lone significant trophy during that time, and it will be seven decades by the time of the EFL Cup final in March since they last won domestic hardware in the FA Cup in 1955.

However, Howe’s manager has been instrumental in turning the team from relegation contenders to 2022–2023 Champions League qualifiers.

The Englishman is now the first Newcastle manager to advance to two semi-finals since Sir Bobby Robson and the first to do it in two domestic tournaments since Stan Seymour in the 1950s.

In reversal, key House panel votes to release Matt Gaetz ethics report

0

Elbahrain.net The House Ethics Committee secretly voted earlier this month to release its report into the conduct of former Rep. Matt Gaetz before the end of this Congress, according to multiple sources with knowledge of the matter.

The report is now expected to be made public after the House’s final day of votes this year as lawmakers leave Washington for the holidays, those sources said.

The vote, which has not previously been reported, amounts to a stark reversal for the panel after it had voted along party lines in late November not to release the results of the investigation. The decision to release the report suggests that some Republicans ultimately decided to side with Democrats on the matter, and it is unclear if the committee will once again change course now that it has voted.

When the committee voted last month to shelve the report, Gaetz was President-elect Donald Trump’s choice to be attorney general. Since then, Gaetz withdrew himself from consideration for the Senate-confirmed post, though he maintains frosty relations with many in his party and is still active in GOP politics.

It is exceedingly rare for an ethics report to be released after a member has left Congress, though it has happened on a couple of occasions in the past. The committee revisited the issue behind closed doors earlier this month after a feud over the report spilled into public view before Thanksgiving.

The Ethics Committee’s report concludes a years-long probe into numerous allegations against Gaetz, including whether he engaged in sexual misconduct, used illicit drugs, “shared inappropriate images or videos on the House floor, misused state identification records, converted campaign funds to personal use, and/or accepted a bribe, improper gratuity, or impermissible gifts,” according to an announcement by the panel last summer.

Gaetz has vigorously denied all the allegations and has characterized the investigation as a witch hunt.

In a post on X in response to CNN’s reporting on Wednesday, Gaetz emphasized that he was “FULLY EXONERATED” by a separate Department of Justice probe. And he said he “NEVER had sexual contact with someone under 18” — a claim that is addressed in the House Ethics report, CNN has previously reported.

“My 30’s were an era of working very hard – and playing hard too. It’s embarrassing, though not criminal, that I probably partied, womanized, drank and smoked more than I should have earlier in life. I live a different life now.”

Speaker Mike Johnson has said that he does not believe the report should be released, since Gaetz is no longer a member of Congress after he abruptly resigned once Trump announced him as his initial attorney general choice. Johnson has acknowledged he has no role on the operations of the panel, which has traditionally operated separately from leadership. Many lawmakers believed that Gaetz resigned to try to bury the investigation.

Gaetz, who was reelected to the seat last month prior to his resignation, has said he has no plans of returning to Congress next year.

“I’m still going to be in the fight, but it’s going to be from a new perch. I do not intend to join the 119th Congress,” he told Charlie Kirk in an interview last month.

“I’m going to be fighting for President Trump. I’m going to be doing whatever he asks of me, as I always have. But I think that eight years is probably enough time in the United States Congress,” he said.

He also recently announced that he will be joining One America News Network in January.

A spokesman for the committee did not respond to CNN’s request for comment.

‘World’s first’ grid-scale nuclear fusion power plant announced in the US

0

Elbahrain.net If all goes to plan, Virginia will be the site of the world’s first grid-scale nuclear fusion power plant, able to harness this futuristic clean power and generate electricity from it by the early 2030s, according to an announcement Tuesday by the startup Commonwealth Fusion Systems.

CFS, one of the largest and most-hyped nuclear fusion companies, will make a multibillion-dollar investment into building the facility near Richmond. When operational, the plant will be able to plug into the grid and produce 400 megawatts, enough to power around 150,000 homes, said its CEO Bob Mumgaard.

“This will mark the first time fusion power will be made available in the world at grid scale,” Mumgaard said. Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin welcomed the announcement, calling it “an historic moment for Virginia and the world at large.”

The plant would represent a new stage in the quest to commercialize nuclear fusion, the process which powers the stars. But the path toward it is unlikely to be smooth, not least because the technology has not yet been proved viable.

The world is desperate for a clean, abundant source of energy that can replace fossil fuels as an always-available baseload power: nuclear fusion promises to be just that.

It involves fusing atoms together to create a powerful burst of energy, achieved using the most abundant element in the universe: hydrogen. The most popular technology uses a donut-shaped machine called a tokamak.

Fusion is near limitless, produces no planet-heating pollution and unlike fission, the nuclear technology the world currently uses, it leaves no legacy of long-term nuclear waste.

But taking it from research projects in labs around the world to commercial use has proved fiendishly difficult. A common joke in the industry is that, for decades, fusion has been just decades away.

It’s something CFS acknowledges. “Nothing occurs overnight in fusion,” Mumgaard said. But the startup, which was spun out of MIT in 2018 and has raised more than $2 billion so far, says it is moving at pace.

It is “deep into” building a tokamak able to demonstrate net fusion energy: meaning a reaction that produces more energy than it consumes. It hopes to produce its first plasma – the superheated cloud of charged gas in which fusion reactions happen – in 2026 and achieve net fusion energy shortly afterward.

Building, owning and operating a power plant to plug fusion power into the grid is its “next act,” Mumgaard said.

The startup looked at more than 100 locations around the world for the power plant before choosing the James River Industrial Center in Virginia. The site is owned by Dominion Energy, which will lease it to CFS and provide technical assistance. The construction process is set to be long and CFS says it is still seeking permits.

The location was chosen for its growing economy, skilled workforce, clean energy focus and the ability it offered to connect into the grid after the retirement of a coal plant, CFS said.

“In the early 2030s, all eyes will be on the Richmond region … as the birthplace of commercial fusion energy,” Mumgaard said.

Virginia is also the world’s largest data center market, a sector that requires huge and growing amounts of energy. Data center electricity consumption in the US is expected to triple by 2030, equivalent to the amount needed to power around 40 million US homes, according to a Boston Consulting Group analysis.

CFS says the Virginia plant is intended to be the first of thousands they plan to put onto the grid in the future.

The startup is far from the only private company trying to accelerate the timeline toward achieving and commercializing nuclear fusion, with others also promising to do so by early next decade.

In general, nuclear fusion startups “tend to be a little aggressive in what they’re promising,” Jerry Navratil, a professor of fusion energy and plasma physics at Columbia University, told CNN last month. There’s a big difference between producing energy from fusion and having a practical system that puts power on the grid and is safe, licensed and operating, he added.

Mumgaard acknowledged “there will be bumps in the road and things won’t change overnight.” But, he added, “the designers and planners can now go from a general notion to a specific location for the next chapter in the fusion journey.”

Nissan and Honda are discussing a combination.

According to reports. Honda and Nissan have discussed the possibility of merging. In order to better compete with. EV manufacturers, especially in China.

The two Japanese automakers decided to look into a strategic alliance for EVs in March.

“As announced in March of this year, Honda and Nissan are exploring numerous possibilities for future collaboration. Using each other’s strengths,” the companies said in similar statements in response to the BBC.

It occurs as the industry transitions from gasoline and diesel automobiles to electric ones. With production in China booming, and many automakers struggle with increased competition.

After the story was initially published by the Nikkei, a Japanese business publication, Honda and Nissan stated that it was “not anything that has been declared by either firm” but did not deny it.

There is no assurance that a deal will be reached because the talks are still in their early phases.

“We will notify our stakeholders at the right time if there are any updates,” they continued.

According to Japanese TV channel TBS, the two businesses could formally acknowledge that they had held the conversations as early as next week.

According to a Bloomberg story, Foxconn approached Nissan about the iPhone manufacturer acquiring a majority share in the automaker. Nissan chose not to respond. A BBC request for comment was not immediately answered by Foxconn.

For a number of reasons, a possible merger between the top two and third-ranked automakers in Japan might be challenging.

Given the possibility of significant job losses, any agreement is likely to be subject to close political examination in Japan. Additionally, Nissan will probably have to end its partnership with French automaker Renault.

In March, Honda and Nissan decided to collaborate on their electric vehicle (EV) companies. In August, they strengthened their relationship by deciding to collaborate on batteries and other technologies.

The two businesses also announced an agreement to talk about electrification and intelligence with Mitsubishi Motors in August.

Additionally, the Nikkei stated that Mitsubishi might eventually be included in any possible alliance between Nissan and Honda. The largest shareholder in Mitsubishi is Nissan.

On Wednesday, Nissan’s stock increased by over 23% in Tokyo.

Mitsubishi’s stock increased by about 20%, while Honda’s dropped roughly 3%.

“In order to exist—and not just to survive, but also to fund the future—it is kind of vital.”

In China, which accounted for over 70% of all EV sales worldwide in November, Honda and Nissan have been losing market share.

Together, the two brands sold 7.4 million cars worldwide in 2023. But they are finding it difficult to compete with less expensive EV manufacturers like BYD. Whose quarterly revenues have soared and surpassed Tesla’s for the first time in October.

Jesper Koll of Monex Group, a Japanese operator of online trading platforms, asked if a combination would increase the companies’ competitiveness.

“Is this merely a reorganization of the Titanic’s deck chairs in the sense that neither Nissan nor Honda have any products or technologies that appeal to consumers around the world?”

“It is a good rescue from that angle, but it is not producing a new national champion.”

Peter Hoskins provided more reporting.

Marcus Rashford intimated he could quit Old Trafford, but Rashford and Amorim are Manchester United boss. Ruben Amorim feels the team is “better” with him.

“Ready for a new challenge and the next steps” in his career is what the 27-year-old. England international declared on Tuesday.

Rashford was benched for United’s derby victory over Manchester City at Etihad Stadium two days prior.

Rashford scored twice in a 4-0 victory over Everton on December 1st, his final Premier League start.

“I do not talk about the future, we talk about the present,” Amorim said, implying that the team wants the striker, who rose through United’s junior systems, to stay.

“With Marcus Rashford, we perform better. He is a huge talent, which is what this kind of club requires.”

“He is right,” Amorim responded when asked if Rashford was looking for a “new challenge.” We face the greatest challenge in football right now, and we are in a tough spot. All of my players should be prepared, I hope.

“We have to choose if they train effectively.”

General’s assassination pierces Moscow’s air of normality

0

Elbahrain.net Appearance and reality: there is a constant battle in Moscow between the two.

Despite nearly three years of war, life here can seem so normal: from the crowds of commuters on the Metro to the bars and clubs packed with young Muscovites.

Then, suddenly, something happens to remind you: there is nothing normal about Russia today.

That “something” can be a Ukrainian drone penetrating Moscow’s air defences.

Or – even more dramatic – what happened on Tuesday morning: the targeted assassination of a senior Russian general as he walked out of an apartment block.

When Lt Gen Igor Kirillov and his assistant Ilya Polikarpov were killed by a bomb concealed on an electric scooter, the reality of Russia’s war on Ukraine hit home.
At least to those Russians close to the crime scene.

“It’s one thing reading about it in the news, it feels far, but when it happens next door to you, that’s completely different and frightening,” Liza tells me. She lives one building from the site of the blast.

“Until now, [the war] felt as if it was happening a long way off – now someone is dead, here, you can feel the consequences.

“My anxiety has gone through the roof. Every sound you hear unnerves you – you wonder whether it’s a drone or something at a construction site,” Liza says.

This perception of Russia’s war in Ukraine as something distant – I’ve heard that so often here. I get the sense that, for a considerable portion of the population, this is a war they only experience on their TV screen or on their smart phone. In many ways, a virtual war.

Astonishing, really, considering the large number of dead and wounded.

But the killing of a Russian general in Moscow: that is a definite wake-up call; proof that this war is very real and very close to home.

The world’s busiest flight routes for 2024 revealed

0

If you think planes have got fuller and the skies busier over the past year, you’d be right — especially if you live in either Hong Kong or Taipei.

Travel intelligence company OAG has released its annual list of the world’s busiest flight routes — and the 105-minute hop between the two has topped the international route board, with nearly 7 million seats on sale in 2024.

The 6,781,577 seatmates have returned the route to its prepandemic popularity — HKG-TPE also topped the board in 2019. It was third last year.

Last year’s list was topped by Singapore-Kuala Lumpur, with a relatively few 4.9 million seats.

Second on the 24 list was Cairo-Jeddah, with nearly 5.5 million seats sold. The Egypt-Saudi Arabia route has had an astonishingly swift growth over the past five years, going from ranking 14th in 2019 to second place in 2023 and 2024.

Seoul took two of the next spots, with routes to Tokyo Narita and Osaka Kansai coming in at third and fourth respectively.

Singapore Changi airport — which had stormed the board in the 2023 rankings — took three spots in the top 10, with routes to Kuala Lumpur (fourth), Jakarta (eighth) and Bangkok (ninth).

The Middle East, Europe and even the US got a look in too, with Dubai-Riyadh at number six, and New York JFK-London Heathrow rounding out the top 10.

When it comes to domestic routes, the top three globally were all in Asia: Jeju International-Seoul Gimpo, Sapporo New Chitose-Tokyo Haneda, and Fukuoka-Tokyo Haneda. Jeju-Seoul has kept the crown of the world’s busiest domestic route, with 14.2 million seats – nearly 39,000 per day.

Analyzing routes per region, Cairo was Africa’s hub, with routes out of the Egyptian capital taking the top five spots for routes leaving the continent. London Heathrow dominated European routes, with JFK-LHR taking the top spot, followed by connections with Dubai and Dublin at number two and four respectively.

Latin America’s top route was between San Juan and Orlando, followed by Lima-Santiago, while Jeddah-Cairo and Dubai-Riyadh topped the Middle East routes. Jeddah to Riyadh is the fastest growing route in the top 10, with a 10% increase in capacity, year on year, to 8.7 million.

The rankings were compiled by calculating the volume of airline seats available in both directions on each route.

The swiftly expanding numbers — as well in the year-on-year bounce from 4.9 million to 6.78 million for the top-ranking route, Cairo-Jeddah is up by 1.3 million, and Asia Pacific routes have seen ”significant growth,” according to OAG’s press release — are less good news for the planet.

In 2022, aviation accounted for 2.1% of manmade carbon emissions worldwide, according to the Air Transport Action Group, and 3.5% of planet-warming emissions in total. At the time, Matteo Mirolo from Transport & Environment, which campaigns for cleaner transport, warned that the expanding industry was bad news.

“If we don’t do anything now, in a few years aviation will be one of the most significant contributing factors,” he said at the time.

“We shouldn’t look at the snapshot now. We should look at the forecast.”

2024 AFF Cup: Losing 0-1 to Vietnam, Indonesian National Team Drops to Second Position in Group B Standings

0

ELBAHRAIN.NET, Indonesian National Team Drops – Team Drops to Second Position – The duel between the Indonesian national team and Vietnam in the preliminary round match of Group B of the 2024 AFF Cup which took place at the Viet Tri Stadium, Sunday, December 15, 2024, ended with a score of 1-0 for the advantage of the home team.

The match was tight. Indonesia’s defense line appeared solid so that it was able to withstand the onslaught of attacks launched by The Golden Warriors throughout the first half. The 0-0 score lasted until halftime.

In the second half, Indonesia had several opportunities through counterattacks. However, Shin Tae-yong’s team was unable to score a goal.

The long-awaited goal occurred in the 77th minute. Vietnamese striker Nguyen Quang Hai scored a goal through a hard kick from inside the penalty box. This goal was the deciding factor in the victory for Kim Sang-sik’s team.

Indonesian National Team Drops

With this victory, Vietnam rose to the top of Group B with six points from two matches, replacing Indonesia in second place with four points from three matches. The Philippines is in third place with two points from two matches. Laos is in fourth place with two points from three matches. Myanmar is in the bottom position with one point from two matches.

Previously, The Golden Warriors won 4-1 at home to Laos in the first match. Meanwhile, Indonesia started this Southeast Asian tournament by winning 1-0 over hosts Myanmar, then drawing against Laos 3-3 at home on Thursday.

After this match, Indonesia will host the Philippines in the last match of the group stage at the Manahan Solo Stadium, Saturday, December 21. Meanwhile, Vietnam still has two matches, namely facing the Philippines in an away match on Wednesday, December 18, and hosting Myanmar on Saturday, December 21.

Vietnamese player Van Vi Nguyen started this match by taking a shot from outside the box after receiving a pass from Quang Hai Nguyen in the third minute. However, his shot was blocked.

In the 12th minute, Vietnam had another chance to score a goal through a header from Tien Linh Nguyen who was standing in the penalty box, after receiving a pass from Tan Tai Ho. But the ball still went wide.

Next, the Vietnamese players had several chances. However, they were still unable to score a goal despite dominating possession of the ball by more than 70 percent.

Indonesian National Team Drops

On the one hand, the Garuda squad’s defense line was able to dampen the onslaught of Vietnam’s attacks. Kadek Arel and his colleagues in the back row were able to appear solid. Goalkeeper Cahya Supriadi also played well by being able to block the ball heading towards his goal several times. The score was a goalless draw at the end of the first half.

In this first half match, Rafael Struick came off the bench in the 40th minute to replace Rivaldo Pakpahan who was injured.

After the break, coach Shin Tae-yong brought in striker Victor Dethan to replace Hokky Caraka. In addition, Pratama Arhan was also brought in as a substitute for Mikael Tata at the start of the second half.

The entry of Victor and Arhan had an impact on the intensity of Indonesia’s attacks. Victor’s movements when the Garuda squad attacked were quite troublesome for the Vietnamese defenders. Arhan, through his throw-in, was also able to create opportunities.

When Indonesia began to increase the intensity of its attacks and was able to create several opportunities through counter-attack schemes, Cahya Supriadi’s goal was conceded in the 77th minute. Vietnam’s striker Nguyen Quang Hai managed to overcome the Garuda squad’s defenders before making a hard shot into the goal.

Shortly after conceding, young striker Ronaldo Kwateh was brought in. He replaced Rayhan Hannan in the 80th minute.

After scoring a goal, Vietnam became more comfortable building attacks. Several opportunities were created again by Nguyen Quang Hai and his colleagues. However, no additional goals occurred. The score of 1-0 lasted until the referee blew the long whistle to signal the end of the match.

Australia Asked for Transfer of 5 Bali Nine Prisoners to Be Done Privately, Here’s Why

0

ELBAHRAIN.NET Australia Asked for Transfer of 5 Bali Nine – Indonesia’s Coordinating Ministry for Law, Human Rights, Immigration,
and Corrections explained that the transfer of the five Bali Nine prisoners to
Australia was carried out privately at the request of the Australian Government. The five Bali Nine members were transferred to their home country, Australia, on Sunday, December 15, 2024.

“That was the request of the Australian government that they wanted to ensure that
everything runs smoothly and we also wanted to ensure that negotiations are also
continuously updated and that everything is safe,” said Special Staff for
International Relations of the Coordinating Ministry for Law and Human Rights,
Imipas, Ahmad Usmarwi Kaffah during a press conference in Jakarta on Monday, December 16, 2024.

Kaffah said that Australia wanted the transfer of the five Bali Nine prisoners not to
be widely discussed in his country. However, Kaffah ensured that the sovereignty of the two countries was the priority in the transfer of international prisoners.

“They want it there, in Australia, not crowded, that’s all. We are also good friends,
as long as they follow our request, respect the sovereignty of our
country and the rules of law that have been decided by the court, why not?” he said.

On the other hand, he said, the Indonesian government also wants the transfer
process to run on time because the convicts being transferred are being held in
different areas, namely Surabaya, East Java; Bangli Regency, Bali; and Kerobokan,
Badung Regency, Bali.

“Prisoners from Surabaya and Bangli must arrive on time in Kerobokan, Badung, Bali,
so that they can be united with the other two prisoners to facilitate mobilization,” said Kaffah.

The Bali Nine is the nickname for nine Australian prisoners who were arrested in
Bali for being involved in a drug syndicate case in 2005. They were proven to have smuggled 8.2 kilograms of heroin. The nine prisoners were Andrew Chan, Myuran Sukumaran,
Si Yi Chen, Michael Czugaj, Renae Lawrence, Tan Duc Thanh Nguyen, Matthew Norman, Scott Rush, and Martin Stephens.
