Much of the US is on high alert due to a severe winter storm.

Tens of millions of Americans are preparing for a massive winter storm. That may deliver the lowest temperatures and most snowfall in more than ten years.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), 30 states are under a weather alert as the storm. Which began in the midsection of the US, moves eastward over the next few days.

Kentucky, Virginia, Kansas, Arkansas, and Missouri have all proclaimed states of emergency. While areas of the United States like Mississippi and Florida that are not used to extreme. Cold have been alerted to the possibility of dangerous conditions.

The polar vortex, a region of freezing air that circulates the Arctic, is causing the unusual weather, according to forecasters.

According to state highway patrol trooper Ben Gardner, road conditions have already gotten worse. With bad weather causing collisions between automobiles and trucks and a fire truck turning over in Kansas.

In a video that was uploaded on X, he showed how slick highways can be by sliding across the tarmac.

“This may be the most significant snowfall in more than ten years for some. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration stated.

“This could result in the coldest January for the United States since 2011,” stated Dan DePodwin, a forecaster for AccuWeather.

“Temperatures That Are Well Below Historical Normal”

can persist for a week, he warned.

The east coast, where the storm is predicted to arrive by Sunday evening, will also experience those low temperatures.

The NWS predicts “dangerous or impossible driving conditions and extensive closures” and “severe disruptions to everyday life” in the central United States through Sunday.

At least 8 inches (20.3 cm) of snow might fall in certain parts of Kansas and Indiana.

There is a chance of blizzards in some areas of the Midwest.

The NWS issued a warning: “Travel will be highly dangerous due to whiteout conditions, with impassable roads and a significant risk of cars becoming stuck.”

Large areas of Kentucky and West Virginia, as well as Missouri and Illinois, are expected to experience sleet and freezing rain.

According to experts, millions more Americans may experience record-low temperatures as the storm heads east.

Cities like Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, DC, are bracing for ice and snowy conditions on Sunday and Monday. In some areas of Virginia, snowfall ranging from 5 to 12 inches was observed.

Severe thunderstorms may also occur on Sunday in areas of the southern United States, such as Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi.

“It is going to be a catastrophe, a potential disaster,” stated Ryan Maue, a private meteorologist. We have not seen anything like this in a long time.”

Due to the possibility of flight interruptions, American, Delta, Southwest, and United airlines are waiving change costs for customers.
