Martin, Southampton’s manager, was fired following Spurs’ crushing defeat.
After Southampton lost to Tottenham 5-0 on Sunday. Leaving them nine points from Premier League safety, manager Russell Martin was fired.
In his first season as manager, Martin, 38. Led the Saints to promotion last year after defeating Leeds United in the Wembley play-off final.
However, Southampton’s 13th league loss out of 16 games this season came against Spurs.
Despite having a league-low 11 goals this season, the St. Mary’s team has only triumphed once, against Everton in November.
“As we readjusted to life in the top division, competing in the best and most competitive league in the world. We all knew going into the start of the season the obstacles that we would encounter this year. A Southampton statement said.
But the truth about our predicament is evident. The board has been clear and honest about our expectations and has backed Russell and his team.
In acknowledging the pressing need for improvement, we have all been in agreement.
“We want to use this opportunity to express our gratitude to Russell and his team for their. Tireless efforts and commitment to the club over the past 18 months. Both on and off the field.
“Everyone associated with Southampton FC will always cherish the wonderful memories of the previous season. Particularly the victory in the May play-off final.”
The senior team’s first match under interim manager Simon Rusk will be a Carabao Cup quarterfinal at home against. Premier League leaders Liverpool on Wednesday.
Martin was fired on the same day as Wolves, another struggling team in the top tier, fired manager Gary O’Neil.
Before halftime, Southampton was behind 5-0 against Tottenham. And some of the home crowd was upset with Martin and Sport Republic, the club’s owners.
Saints’ roster has been exposed in the Premier League due to their leaky defense and lack of goals, even though they made nine permanent additions in the summer.
Martin remarked, “This is a really risky job,” following the game. “I can not sit here feeling confident about my work after losing 5-0 and being last in the table.
“Working and fighting are my only options. I have only done it in this position, and I will not change it unless I am told to.
At this point in a Premier League season, no team has ever finished with five points or less and escaped relegation.
Martin’s refusal to stray from his possession-based passing philosophy has not worked because:
Southampton’s goal differential after 16 Premier League games this season is the worst of just four teams.
This season, Southampton has made more mistakes that resulted in goals than any other team (10), and more blunders that resulted in shots than any other team (26).
Southampton will visit Fulham in their next league match before hosting West Ham and Crystal Palace at the end of the season.
“They have imploded a lot,” Danny Murphy, a BBC Sport analyst, stated on Match of the Day 2.
“Football is cruel, and if you are at the bottom and the supporters and hierarchy want to keep you up, you will be moved on. I believe it is too late, but someone else will step in and do an incredible job.”
“You need to be more adaptable than he [Martin] was,” he continued. In the end, you will suffer in the Premier League if your hiring is poor and you lack a lot of Premier League expertise, which is what happened.”
During the match against Spurs, Southampton supporters displayed a banner that said, “RM: Get out of our club!”
